The Second Shenzhen Contemporary Theatre Festival has been a huge success. It has officially reached to an end but leaving audiences full of inspirations and reflection. Lotus Lee Foundation would like to continue with its highlights on international collaboration.

Classic Collision session of the Performance unit intends to present the conflicts between contemporary theatre and old masters of literature after centuries, thus creating an avant-garde and thought-provoking atmosphere. It would be a global debut for two theatre work, He Had Two Pistols with White and Black Eyes of Dario Fo and another one adapted from Bertolt Brecht.  Both plays were directed by Meng Jinghui, the prestigious Chinese playwright. The other performances of the unit includes Albert Camus’s The Stranger re-directed by young Chinese female director Yang Ting, as well as Embrace Macbeth directed by 90s-born young director Ding Yiteng, who has been inspired by William Shakespeare.

Meng Jinghui’s work He Had Two Pistols with White and Black Eyes was adapted from the literature work with same name written by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo. The play has been invited to perform at opening ceremony at the Spoleto Art Festival, the prominent culture event of Italy. The cultural exchange has aroused huge attention from local media and artists. From Italy to China, He Had Two Pistols with White and Black Eyes will bring the discussion and exploration across time and space for the audiences at the biennale.

The Presentation Unit of the festival embraced a different theme “The Arousal of Awareness”. Panels and workshops on theatre education and practices have been launched, including Spanish Theatre performance workshop, Taiwan modern dance performance workshop, as well workshops respectively moderated by director Wang Yuanyuan from Beijing Contemporary Ballet and Yang Ting, the emerging young female director. These activities accessed the public to the core of theatre art, as well as opportunities to participate in actual theatre performances. Meanwhile, artist talks were also arranged after multiple performances at the event, fostering the mutual communication and intensifying the understanding of contemporary theatre between artists and the audiences.

Shenzhen Contemporary Theatre Biennale has been an experiment on the contemporary culture of the coastal city in the south of China. “We have never been so close to the moment, ” Meng Jinghui said, “which makes me believe that all the things we have gone through is to introduce theatre art to the future.” “The Second Shenzhen Contemporary Theatre Festival is a just a beginning, there’s no boundaries when it comes to art.” Jian Dingxiong, the head of Culture Department of Futian Shenzhen said so at the event.
